Zanzibar is known across the globe as the “Spice Island”. For centuries, the Island of Zanzibar has attracted visitors to its shores – traders, holiday makers, people seeking refuge from the hectic outside world.
In the early 19th Century the clove tree was discovered in Zanzibar during the Omani Arabic regime. By the mid-19th Century Zanzibar had become the largest producer of cloves and the largest slave port on the East Coast. Both these factors contributed to Zanzibar becoming one of the most important towns on the East African Coast, as virtually all East African trade passed through this island. Towards the end of the 19th Century however, the Omani Sultans continued to rule but under a British protectorate, until 1963 when independence was granted to Zanzibar.
The mainland or main town of the Island of Zanzibar is called Stone Town. The numerous different cultures and people that passed through Zanzibar left a mark on Stone Town. Walking through Stone Town, one will come across narrow streets, whitewashed, coral-rag houses, small shops and kiosks, bazaars, mosques, courtyards, a fortress, two former Sultan’s palaces, two cathedrals, Persian public bathhouses and some foreign diplomatic establishments.
The beaches of Zanzibar are something not to be missed. Free of commercialism and over-crowding, Zanzibar proves the perfect retreat for those wanting a relaxing holiday in a utopic setting. Palms trees, soft white sand, warm water and the luxury of some of the world’s finest hotels and resorts.
A Spice Tour is something that should not be missed while in Zanzibar. Your Spice Tour will involve visits to the various spice and fruit plantations around the island of Zanzibar.
