Over four hundred years ago, the warm waters of the Indian Ocean and the port of Mombasa used to be a key passageway for the Arabian spice trade.
The population of Mombasa, Kenya's second largest city, comprises of many diverse peoples, though Swahili and Arabic cultures are predominant. Walking through the Mombasa Old Town, one will come across winding narrow roads, mosques, open air markets and people bustling about their own business in the crowded streets. Bright colours, spicy scents and an atmosphere of ancient mystique will enthrall you. |

One of the most outstanding features of Mombasa is Fort Jesus. At the end of the 16th Century, the Portuguese began to construct the fort to protect the natural harbour. Fort Jesus still dominates the harbour entrance to this day. The Fort is now a National Monument and Museum, and is a fascinating testament to the history of this coastal town and the crucial role it played in the history of East Africa.
Kenya's coastline is split into the South and the North Coasts. From both the South and North coasts, there are further coastal splits, which result in many quaint coastal towns and excellent holiday beaches
